White Paper: Thermal Modeling of Small Satellites

In recent years, the number of satellites in orbit has increased, in part due to their smaller sizes. With more compact designs, it is possible to launch multiple small satellites from a single rocket. Inside these satellites are miniaturized electronics that are packed closely together and can generate waste heat and subsequently cause structural deformations. Engineers must design the satellites to properly radiate the heat to surrounding space in order to keep the electronics within safe temperature ranges. Preflight testing is difficult and costly, and when the satellite is in orbit, components may fail in unexpected ways, making modeling and simulation beneficial in satellite design and maintenance.
