Magnetic "shielding" problem: Microscope objective inside Helmholtz coils

I am looking at the perturbation of the magnetic field generated by Helmholtz coils due to a microscope objective between the coils. The objective is has a thin Ni/Cr coating that is magnetic. I know of a tutorial problem of a submarine in the Earth's magnetic field. In that example the Earth's field is a uniform background while the objective I am dealing with extends over a non-uniform field between the coils, i.e., the objective is large w.r.t. the coils. I want to combine the mode used to describe the thin magnetic "shield" with the current mode for the coils. Does anyone have some ideas of what to do here?
