computer hardware, one slot of RAM nor more than 8GB?

I am about to purchase a new workstation for running COMSOL with the specific intent to run 3D RF models. For the RAM, I have two choices: 16 x 8GB and 8 x 16GB, which is better? I was told that for one slots of RAM, it should no more than 8GB, does that right?
