Calculating grad(|E|^2)

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

I have tried to calculate the gradient force on a gold nano particle exerted by a 785-nm laser, and the equation of the gradient force has grad(|E|^2). However, I have known that grad() mean to differentiate something like a vector, not a scalar, |E|^2 must be scalar, isn't it?

IN SHORT, How can I calculate grad(|E|^2)?
