How to simulate crystal birefringence

I want to simulate crystal birefringence,but I dont know how to define the optical axis of the crystal and its intrinsic polarization direction. I use Ray Optics module to simulate Birefringence , but it cant show birefringence phenomenon. So, what I need to do to get crystal birefringence.
