Model of planar capacitance

Hi everyone, I'm new to COMSOL and I need to model this within 1 week, so please bear with me if my question sounds too stupid.

I'm designing a circuit where my parallel plate capacitance gets "opened" up into a co-planar capacitance. So to begin with, I am designing a parallel plate capacitor first. After watching a few videos, I understood that I have to first make a circuit and then model my capacitance in that circuit. To do this, I made an electric circuit with a voltage source V1, an External I vs U1, ground node 1. However, COMSOL keeps giving me an error saying "The DAE is structurally inconsistent". Is this because I have not specified a resistor? My circuit is purely capacitive, so why is it necessary to specify a resistance? And if so, what value of resistance do I have to put? My capacitor "plates" are made of copper and are squares with sides of 9cm. And the spacing between the capacitor plates is 9.5cm. Also, there is a guard ring around the receive plate of the capacitor plate, how do I add this to the model?

  • I think, Electrostatics (es) is better suited, you don't have currents flowing in the capacitance.
  • I do not understand the sphere in the geometry.
  • You want an air domain around the device.
  • Exploit symmetry!!!! You only need 1/16th

Hi jen,

The sphere is supposed to represent air. Since I'm new to this, I used the webinar on RC modeling and was following that. Can you perhaps link me to a tutorial for electrostatics then? Or one where I can model capacitor?
