Nanoparticle array simulation using Port+PML realisation

Hello everyone!
I'm trying to simulate transmission spectra of nanoparticle array. Actually I'm reproducing results of the article published in JOSA B (Vol. 34, No. 3 / March 2017 / Journal of the Optical Society of America B). During my first step I built up unit cell and 2 Floquet boundary conditions together with 2 periodic ports on the top and bottom of the structure. After simulation I got spectrum that was really close to the resut presented in the mentioned article, however some resonances were very weak. In this article researchers used PML, so I employed PML the same way it was used in the example of light scattering on a nanoparticle(application example - scatterer on substrate). After simulation I got some unphysical resonances. There is a resonance that correspond to LSPR, it was significantly shifted comparing to the system without PML. During both simulations I used the same mesh properties, the only difference was in using PML. In the attached you will find both spectra.
Here are some questions:
- Is it important to cover the whole unit cell with PML?
- Is it possible to cover only top and bottom of the unit cell and how can I use periodic conditions for this PML?
