Difference between trimming and splitting for handling of sharp edges

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering what the difference is between trimming and splitting in boundary layer mesh settings? I'm running a model where choosing one or the other drastically affects the output, with trimming seeming to give a more reasonable result. I'm wondering what the actual mechanism is?
