What role does a 'spring foundation' applied to a boundary play in contact analysis, even when there's no such spring force existing in the original model?

It is sometimes used for stabilizing parts of structures that have possible rigid body modes in the initial configuration (before contact is established).

From version 6.2, a better approach is to add a Stabilization subnode under Contact.
