Second Piola Kirchoff Stress tensor vs user defined stress tensor: Linear elastic Model

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hello all.

I am modeling shear wave propagation in a linear elastic medium by applying an impulsive force. Theoretically if we apply an additional external stress in the medium in shear wave propagation direction, the shear wave speed (sws) should increase.

If I set the '2nd Piola Kirchoffs stress tensor' with 'load contribution only' in the 'external stress tensor (material) input', the sws is found to be increased in the output results. But if I apply any 'user defined' value of external stress input, the sws is not increasing and remaining the same for the cases of with and without applying the external stress in the model.

I want to know why its coming like this. What value of external stress input is COMSOL using by defualt when the '2nd Piola Kirchhoff stress' is set as 'external stress tensor input'. What is the right way to set the 'user defined' external stress input for modeling the shear wave propagation in linear elatic medium.

Note: The deformation is very small in my case compareded to the original dimensions, so geometric linearity can be assumed.
