Biot-Savart formulation

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Dear all,

I was wondering about the Magnetic Fields, Current Only (mfco) interface. It says that " In free space it returns the value of the Biot-Savart integral.", which I could confirm after investigating the equations. I expected this interface to enable single point or boundary evaluation of the magnetic field (or flux density) generated by a coil. However, it seems to be restricted to complete domains/volumes...

In my understanding, the Biot-Savart law is computationaly advantageous when local evaluation of the magnetic field is desired (in a space with uniform magnetic permeability). What is the point of evaluating it "everywhere" ? Why not use a Magnetic field (mf) formulation then, that will solve Ampère's law everywhere and probably be faster?

My final goal is to be able to localy evaluate the magnetic field (a few points), generated by a random/complex coil design. As the domain space has a uniform magnetic permeability, I desired to use Biot-Savart law to prevent the use of a large "air box", which would result in a unnecessary larger number of elements in my mesh.

Hope someone can help me on this one. Best Adrien
