Element Numbering and Material Properties

First of all, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to output in Matlab the numbering system for elements in a basic figure. I see how to get the number of elements, but not how they are numbered within the geometry.
From there, is there a way to give material properties to different element sets/different element numbers? I am struggling to find a way to do this because I cannot just create new geometries in Matlab or Comsol, the ones I am working with are too complicated.
Also, can an image in either .bmp, .jpeg, or .tif form be imported to Matlab using Comsol 4.1 and Matlab R2010a?
I am new to Comsol, and any help would be appreciated.

Kelly. Have you been found the way to give material properties to different element sets?
