Negative Contact Pressure

Hi,
I'm trying to implement simple contact between two surfaces using a contact pairs, but I'm having trouble making sense of the results. According to the model, the contact pressure along a single boundary includes both positive and negative values. How can this be? Shouldn't all contact loads be compressive?

A part of the model I'm developing requires contact pressure as an input variable so I need to produce a smooth pressure function.

Any help would be much appreciated.
