Modeling Thermal Runaway for Safer Lithium Ion Batteries

Hi,
the energy balance between heat generation and heat dissipation is described as following:
∂(ρ∁_p T)/∂t=-∇(k∇T)+Q(abuse)
where Q(abuse) = ΔH*M^n*A*exp(-E/R*T)
(reaction heat generation, when the battery is undergoing thermal runaway)
ΔH = heat of reaction
M = mass of reactant
n = reaction order
E = activation energy
R = gas constatnt.

Thermal runaway caused fire and explosion of lithium ion battery

how to simulate Q(abuse) in comsol ??

Hi,

when you add a heat transfer interface to the the Lithium-Ion Battery interface, you can add a heat source. For the general heat source COMSOL automatically provides "Total power dissipation density". If you would like to know how this quantity is calculated, you can have a look at all Variables under "Lithium-Ion Battery > Electrolyte > Equation View". Note that this view can be activated with the "Show" button on top of the model builder (small eye symbol).

Alternatively, an own heat source can be implemented by choosing "user defined".

Best regards
Bettina Schieche
