how to calculate the area of a multiturn coil

Do you mean: (1) the effective area of flux that it "encloses" (so to speak) from the perspective of a self-inductance calculation, (2) the surface area of the wire itself (= ) where r=the wire radius and l=the total length of wire, or (3) something else?
