How can I create a representative volume element (RVE)?

Could anyone tell me how to get started on modelling this? - I am specifically interested in the modelling aspect. I need it to estimate the effective elastic properties of a periodic microstructure for which I know I need to use Cell Periodicity feature in Solid Mechanics. Would I just start modelling in the 3D geometry section with the right shapes?
