COMSOL keeps closing

I have an urgent problem concerning COMSOL. I am using modes such as "weakly-compressible navier stokes" and PDE modes, and I realise for some models I cannot open; the COMSOL will load and then close by itself. For other models, when I click on the meshing button to see the meshing elements, the COMSOL also closes by itself.
Each time, after closing, a new file will appear in the folder where the comsol file is in, always named "hs_error_xxxxx"
I understand that this is a problem involving Java, and I have reinstalled the latest Java updates, as well as uninstalling the Java updates, but both methods failed to resolve this problem.
Is there anyone who has encountered this and knows how to resolve it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Stan

What is your OS??and what about the memory used?
What is written in the error file?
I wonder if this crash is limited only for the mentioned files and modes or it is not working for all the models?
Cheers

Thanks for the reply.
I get an error message that indicates the problem lies with Java. But Java did not reply to any of my messages.
I am using Windows 7.
Currently I am doing simulation involving fuel cells, which means I use Weakly COmpressible Navier Stokes mode, or PDE mode that incorporates Navier Stokes and / or Darcy's Law. Meshing is required to solve because it uses finite element method.
It crashes most of the time when I click on the "mesh" button that reveals the meshing density in the models. It is extremely annoying. Once in a while it will not crash but 7 out of 10 times it crashes, and a new error file appears, named in the following form: hs_err_pidxxxxxx
A sample error message is as follows:

I would try to increase Java heap size (MAXHEAP) in the comsol.opts file, and see if it helps.

Most error messages you receive from COMSOL are printed using Java, so it is easy to think it is a java problem, but most likely is a problem with your model. How much memory to you have on your computer, what type of OS are you using, etc. ? Then we can go from there. Try a very simple model first, and see what your limitations in resources are; particularly with 32-bit windows computers which are the most limited.

I have tried increasing MAXHEAP under comsol.opt settings but it still crashes frequently. Once in a while the files manage to open. The models are pretty simple, it's just a rectangular block. Some files aren't even meshed yet, but the meshing usually involves a few thousand elements.
Other files like 2D figures with meshing of probably less than a thousand elements crash too.
It should be noted this problem didn't arise when I was using my previous desktop with 2 gigabyte RAM, Windows Vista 32-bit. I had opened the exact same models without having it crash on me at any time.
Thanks

have you checked the KB, applied the hotfix 1 on 3.5a (if it applies to you), or tried a search of "java" on the KB's, there a few "know" issues described thered depending on your versions
Last but not least try Support, I find them very efficent
Good luck

Thanks for the reply.
Have installed the Hotfix but it didn't help.
There is no luck with the KB. Most of the help regarding Java involves solving Java-Matlab related problems and error messages. There is an article involving resolving memory intensive models, by changing MAXHEAP/MAXHEAPSERVER in the comsol.opts file, which I have tried and did not work at all.
Finally, because I am using a "student license" I am not eligible to ask for help in support. I have tried it before and was told this.
EDIT: Seems that by running COMSOL under "Compatibility mode with Windows Vista" fixed the issue though. Thanks all for the help!

thanks for the clue, Win7 is new, cannot expect everything to be 100% compatible all the time
Have a nice day

I have the same problem as you. COMSOL keeps closing for some models. I don't think I have memory problem because my model is not so large compared to my previous models and I have 12Giga memory. I receive the same Java errors as you. My model is a transient piezoelectric solid stress strain model and I use windows XP. Do you have any idea how I should fix my problem.
Thanks

This reminds me about one issue that happend to me with a heavy model file:
Try to open COMSOL with any simple model, turn off the "show symbols" feature in the graphics menu to the left close COMSOL and reopen your model
or access this by Options Preferences - Visualisation tab turn off Symbols (and any other extra feature), If I remember it was linked to a Java bug when too many things were showed on the screen
there is something in the KB about this I believe
Hope this helps

I tried that but it didn't help and this comsol model keeps closing as soon as I try to solve it.but I will keep your advice in mind because I usually have a lot of symbols shown in comsol visiualization.
Thank you

Although the posts are for about 2 years ago, but I write these cause this may work for someone else.
I had the same problem! I tried "running in compatibility mode", "disabling windows vista Aero display", "changing my ATI settings", .. none of them worked!
Then I went to Option>Preferences>Graphics> and changed "Rendering" from OpenGL to "DirectX 9". Things are working well by now!
Hope be useful for others,
Mona

Thanks for sharing this good information. Actually this problem still happens to me sometimes. Next time it happens,I will try the setting that you recommanded.

this hapened to me each 2-3 months with 4.1 and 4.2, but it seemd to be Windows that for some reason had black listed comsol and did not allow it to launch, it appeared more often if for some reason I had to kill the process or COMSOL crashed, but 3 or more times without a graceful COMSOL exit.
Eigther a reboot, or logging in as another person launcing COMSOL once, then opening a file saving it and closing correctly mostly reset the things. I have not had it with 4.2a nor 4.3. But I have also updated my Windows an other software a few times since too ;)
It appeared two days aftre a Windows update too, while before I had run 4.1 for months without problems.
As there are many technologies linked, OS, Java, DirectX ... and many software that uses these things, I suspect some cross incompatibilities.
Another knowncase : a BAD RAM location, you could check your RAM, as today we have quite a lot and a HW error is not always easy to detect neither

Good luck

I did the same as Mona did and it worked for me!

I too did what Mona said, and it works now.
Great, Thanks!!

Comsol was closing too often whenever i hover over the graphics window. Hence i had to build and run the model every time. But the solution suggested by Mona was really a lifesaver. I issue has been fixed.
Thanks and Regards,
Mahesh
