What are the physical and virtual memory in comsol interpreted during the solution?

When I press solving to compute my model, I always see the numbers at the bottom right "physical memory" and "Virtual memory." What is the importance of these numbers? How do you interpret them?
I have 8 GB of Ram but when I solve a problem that takes four days to finish, it only used 600MB/1129MB of memory only. Why is that?
