geometry import - subdomain conflict

Dear All,

I am trying to do the following: import an assembly drawn in Inventor into Comsol. I exported the file from Inventor as a *.stp file and imported that into Comsol. The file is imported without any obvious problems.

Later, I need to define a point load in a part of the body that I have imported. Unfortunately, there is no point on where I need to define the point load, so I inserted an additional point using draw, in Comsol GUI. Then I got the error message:
"internal error on geometry decomposition".

I tried to import the geometry as surface instead of solid and checked the use assembly, which led to be able to place the point where I want without getting error messages, but now I cannot assign my point load, as the point appears gray (inactive) in the point list in the point settings menu.

To sum up, I am trying to import a 3D model into Comsol and define a specific point in that body to be able to apply a point load. Any ideas how to do it?

Hi

the easiest to get a point on a suface is to split a sirface along two lines intesecting at the point, then you can select points and/or lines and use them easily as metrology elements.

But note, loading a 2D or 3D structure via a point is a singularity and your results will be doubptfull around the point, whatever you select as mesh

Good luck
