when real part of refractive index is lower than imaginary part

I am modeling a wave guide. When real part of refractive index is larger than imaginary, I am getting expected field profile, but when real part is smaller than imaginary, field profile looks strange for one mode (TM) while TE mode field profile is ok . Actually, I am running graphene simulation, graphene has a negative permitivity (when applied voltage) which is equivalent to lower real part of refractive index than imaginary.
However, why field profile looks wrong for TM mode (field intensity is high in whole computation area including PML region) when real part of refractive index lower than imaginary? TE mode looks alright.
Please receive attached file of filed profile for two modes.

I would be grateful if anyone can help me.
